AIIMS Cohort Study

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has initiated a cohort study to determine the association between various risk factors in stroke and dementia. This cohort study is a collaborative effort between AIIMS, New Delhi and The Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The study was formally launched by the then Hon’ble Minister of Science & Technology & Earth Sciences, Govt. of India, Shri Jaipal Reddy; and Hon’ble Minister of Health, Welfare and Sports, The Netherlands, Ms. Edith I Schippers at AIIMS, New Delhi on 30th January 2014. The study is supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India.

AIIMS Cohort Study (ACS) is based on the premise that patients usually present to AIIMS after gradual and / or incremental adverse effects accumulated over the years culminating in a serious event. Determining the cause of the event is as difficult as finding the cause of fire in a burning building. This study aims to take AIIMS to apparently healthy people to observe them over several years to the point of development of event in some, compare and contrast those with event or no event, and determine the factors underlying the event. This is like installing a CCTV, which records activities on daily basis and then helps finding out the cause of fire in a building. Read more
